Discover Malaysia’s Tropical Culture

Get a taste of Malaysian culture through unequaled artistic, culinary and historic offerings in and around Penang.

About Your Trip

Journey to Penang and discover some of Malaysia’s ancient and culturally significant landmarks. Start at a tropical fruit farm, home to more than 250 types of fruits. Learn about the art of batik painting, then make your way to the Clan Jetties in George Town to marvel at an interesting collection of stilted houses with narrow wooden walkways. Along the way, take in the street art where painted murals and wirework can be seen on the sides of buildings and houses. Your next stop is the Khoo Kongsi, a large Chinese clan house. Pass through the streets of Little India before heading to the Blue Mansion for a glimpse at a typical Chinese-style courtyard house.

The next day, take a cable-car ride up Penang Hill. Visit the Kek Lok Si, one of Southeast Asia’s largest and oldest Buddhist temples — known for its impressive architecture that took 20 years to build. Upon returning to your hotel, enjoy your leisure time and further explore the city on your own.

What we love:
• Batik is popular throughout Asia and can be seen on many textile products, from skirts to tablecloths.
• Early 20th-century Chinese settlements on Weld Quay, known as the Clan Jetties, formed a water society that exists to this day 7 clans still reside in these houses on stilts.
• Themed heritage walking tours available throughout George Town enable visitors to explore the city’s culture and history at their own pace try the Food Trail or Heritage Building Trail.

Destination

Penang, known as “The Pearl of the Orient,” is located on the northwest coast of Malaysia and is spread between a mainland and Penang Island. It boasts world-heritage architecture, sandy beaches, lush rain forests, colonial-era churches and ancient temples. Add to this an abundance of dining options, and Penang is among the most popular travel destinations in Malaysia.

The region’s cuisine is unique and varied, thanks to a mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan cultures. Food is available on nearly every street corner — not just confined to restaurants and cafes — and is cooked in small batches ready to eat on the spot. Try assam laksa, a spicy noodle soup that combines Chinese and Malay cuisine, or sambal udang, a well-known Peranakan dish of prawns in chili.
